MAP C:The Kyoto Station Area
Higashi-kujo is a precinct of Kyoto’s Southern District (Minami-ku). This area is also referred to by its relative location to Kyoto Station: eki-ura (behind the station). The front of Kyoto Station faces north, toward the old Imperial Palace, and the center of Kyoto City. Eki-ura districts in many cities are areas where residences and occupations “on the wrong side of the tracks” can be found (such as Kabukicho in Tokyo, or Kyoto’s Sanjo eki-ura [Higashiyama] buraku area). I would suggest that this is probably so, as the train stations were built on the edges of the cities, where the land values were lower, and so they fronted the older, outsider communities.
